Mickey Moniak delivers key hits in Rockies 6-4 win
In a much-needed payoff for a struggling offense, the Colorado Rockies salvaged a win to conclude their home stand with a 6–4 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Coors Field Sunday afternoon, avoiding a series sweep.
Mickey Moniak was the star of the afternoon. The former No. 1 overall pick went 3-for-4, blasting a leadoff home run to right field in the very first frame and later delivering a two-run triple in the fifth, coming a double shy of the cycle. His three RBIs came on plays marked by both power and hustle, and he also made a slick sliding catch in center.
Michael Toglia provided the go-ahead run with a two-run homer in the fifth, delivering Colorado past the 4–4 deadlock with an absolute moonshot to center field. It was his first home run since mid‑June and a punch to break the momentum in Denver’s favor.
The efforts of the offense helped offset another rough start for rookie starter Chase Dollander. He showed flashes early but struggled with command, walking four over 3⅔ innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits. Manager Warren Schaeffer turned to Zach Agnos in relief who allowed one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. The trio of Juan Mejia, Victor Vodnik, and Seth Halvorsen locked things down over the final four innings, allowing no runs or hits with Halvorsen earning his eighth save.
Chicago struck first in the third and fourth innings with timely hits and a bit of fortune—a grounder that deflected off second base turned into a run-scoring hit. Colson Montgomery also brought in a run with an RBI single—the rookie netting his first in the majors. However, those efforts were undone by Colorado’s middle-inning onslaught in the fifth inning.
With the win, the Rockies improved to 21–69 and now head to Boston to kick off their final road trip before the All-Star Break. Austin Gomber will get the start, with Richard Fitts starting for Boston.
