deGrom Earns Win On Jersey Giveaway Night As Rangers Down O’s 10-2

The name Jacob deGrom sells tickets unlike any other pitcher in baseball. From the very start of the year, the Rangers have been flashing “deGrom day” billboards across the metroplex.

On Tuesday night, deGrom’s start alone was enough to sell tickets, but combine that with his jersey giveaway night, and you get 30,933 fans packing Globe Life Field.

Those fans were not disappointed as deGrom went six innings, allowing just two runs and earning the win as the Rangers routed the Orioles by a score of 10-2.

Not only did the fans go home happy with the result, but their presence was felt, as deGrom continues to create a simply different atmosphere when he pitches.

“I noticed, warming up, that there were a lot of people here,” deGrom said. “We’re always thankful for the support, and fortunately enough, we were able to win in front of them”.

It’s not just the fans who get a sense of confidence and excitement when deGrom takes the mound, but also the rest of the Rangers, and rightfully so based on what they’ve seen from their ace this season.

Tonight’s start marks the 14th straight in which deGrom has gone five or more innings, allowing two or fewer runs, extending his franchise best streak and matching the second longest streak in the AL since Mariners legend Felix Hernandez’s 17-game run in 2014.

“Anytime you have a starter that consistently gets you quality starts, it’s huge as far as just giving you a chance to win a ballgame,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “You feel like if you just put a few runs on the board, you like your chances, it’s so important for the bullpen too, especially after we’ve used the bullpen the way we have the last couple days to have a guy out there who could give them a break”.

Following four consecutive extra-inning games, the Rangers’ bullpen had thrown over 300 pitches coming into today’s game.

deGrom’s 6 inning effort followed by Jacob Latz finishing the remaining three innings and earning his first career save, Texas was able to give the bullpen a much-needed break”.

“They [Rangers bullpen] have to be running on fumes, so for the game to go the way it did, it really couldn’t have gone better,” Bochy said. “We have some coverage tomorrow, we have some length, and some guys that need freshening up. Latzy [Jacob Latz] first career save happy for him, once he went one inning, we knew he couldn’t go tomorrow, so we let him go and he’ll get two or three days off, but it couldn’t have gone better”.

Despite the pitching not needing much run support, the Rangers offense gave them more than they could wish for.

Every Texas starter recorded at least one hit as the Rangers exploded for 10 runs on 14 hits, including six hits with runners in scoring position.

Outfielders Adolis Garcia and Alejandro Osuna combined to knock in six of the ten runs as Garcia had a pair of two-RBI singles and Osuna blasted his first career home run via a two-run shot in the 5th.

“In order to be consistent putting runs on the board, you need three or four guys that are swinging the bats well, that’s how you put up a crooked number,” Bochy said. “If you have someone in there struggling, maybe it stops the line a little bit, but they’re all swinging it well right now. That’s what this club needs, we just need consistency for the most part in order, and I think lately it’s been like that”.
