Duncan Robinson Leaves Miami for Detroit
Shams Charania broke the news Tuesday evening that Duncan Robinson would leave the Miami Heat and sign a 3-year, $48 million deal with the Detroit Pistons.
Robinson returns to the state of Michigan after spending his college years as a Wolverine, so it’s fitting that Robinson’s first time departing South Beach in his playing career will be for the place where he played his college ball.
Robinson is a major blow to the Miami Heat organization, especially fans who loved to watch him play. We saw the writing on the wall this weekend when Robinson exercised his early termination option and joined this free agency class. As much as Heat fans wouldn’t want to admit it, this seems to be a mutual parting of ways.
Robinson didn’t see his playing time increase in Erik Spoelstra’s offense like he would have wanted. Whether that be his defensive liability or wanting to showcase other players at his position, Robinson could never break through to be a consistent starter in the lineup. Instead, he used his minutes to become the franchise’s leader in 3-pointers with 1,202 career threes. Robinson is one of only eight undrafted players to hit that four-digit landmark from three-point range.
For what Duncan Robinson leaves in Miami, the Heat have wing players they can distribute more playing minutes to, if they are not included in a trade for a star player. The Heat didn’t include Haywood Smith, Nikola Jovic, or Jaime Jaquez Jr. in a deal for Kevin Durant, so one has to wonder if the Heat have plans to delegate more minutes and responsibilities to these players. Yet, these players do not have Robinson’s skill set as a sharpshooter.
The Heat were able to acquire Simone Fontecchio in the sign-and-trade deal. Fontecchio has shot 36.3% from three-point range during his career in 18.9 minutes per game. The Heat have taken players who haven’t had opportunities elsewhere, like Davion Mitchell, and had their character fit the culture in Miami. But they are banking on Fontecchio coming in as a shot-in-the-dark and helping the Heat faithful forget what Robinson leaves behind.
At the end of the day, Robinson’s a real professional and any team would have been thrilled to have him. Now that team will be the Detroit Pistons.
As for the Pistons, their free agency has tried to capitalize on the team’s youth with two former Michigan Wolverines — Caris LeVert and, now, Duncan Robinson. LeVert and Robinson played together at Michigan in 2015 and 2016.
The Pistons made these acquisitions after Malik Beasley was caught up in a gambling-related investigation amid financial issues. After Beasley’s sharpshooting off the bench, the Pistons plug Robinson in, who instantly fills that void left by Beasley, who might not play at all next year, if not better.
Detroit is a young team that will be built on the backs of Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson. Robinson will add a much-needed perimeter threat for the Pistons, a must-have for any team wanting to compete in today’s NBA.
With the Eastern Conference struggling after the injuries to Tatum and Haliburton, the Pistons could find themselves as a darkhorse in the East if they continue to build. Robinson is a major piece to that puzzle.
