Chelsea Sign João Pedro From Brighton

Chelsea have returned to the Brighton well, though this time the deal was wrapped up far more swiftly compared to the Moisés Caicedo transfer saga. The Ribeirão Preto native is now making his second move in English football, jumping from a mid-table Brighton side to a Chelsea squad aiming to contend and have a deep Champions League run.

There had been recent interest from Newcastle, who were reportedly in hot pursuit of the 23-year-old. However, the story being told is that as soon as Chelsea came calling, Pedro chose to decline Newcastle’s advances. He has now signed a seven-year deal with Chelsea, with the transfer fee reported to be at least £50 million and potentially rising closer to £60 million.

Pedro is the definition of versatile, able to play as a number 10, a left winger, or a striker, and he has performed well in all three roles over recent seasons. His 16 goal contributions in the Premier League last season came in just 1,900 minutes, which is an excellent return considering he was often the main attacking option at his club. At Chelsea, where he won’t draw as much individual attention, he could find more freedom to influence games with his creativity.

It’s hard to say whether he will be a regular starter, as other players in the squad have also made strong cases for selection. Still, Pedro’s flexibility is likely what appealed to Enzo Maresca, who reportedly gave the green light for Chelsea to secure the Brazilian international.

Overall, this is an exciting move. From all reports, Chelsea may still be looking to add one more attacking player this summer, which would complete their plans for the forward line.
