Malik Beasley Scandal: The Trickle Down Affect

On June 28th it was reported that there was strong interest between the Detroit Pistons and Malik Beasley on coming to an agreement on a long-term deal. Just a day after that report, it was announced that the U.S District Attorney’s Office is investigating Malik Beasley on allegations of gambling relating to NBA games.

Beasley was a high priority signing going into the off-season after a record-setting shooting display this past year. But all that is in question with the looming investigation hanging over his head. Last Summer, Beasley signed a 1 year $6 million pillow contract with the hopes of proving himself worthy of more guaranteed money. All things suggested that would come to fruition, but the question is how does this affect how the Pistons move forward at this point. Detroit have two other guards whom appear to be interested in resigning with them as well. Will Detroit pivot their attention to addressing those demands or go in a completely different direction.

In hindsight, it appears the writing was on the wall. Detroit elected to draft a high volume movement shooter in the 2nd round just a few days ago. The shooting guard market isn’t exactly plentiful with talent, but the one name that has been linked to the team is Neil Alexander-Walker as of late. He will likely hit the open market with Minnesota prioritizing other players, extending Julius Randle and Naz Reid to long-term deals. Given the Pistons current situation it may be essential to put our best foot forward in securing Alexander-Walker. He is a two-way wing that can initiate the offense and space the floor on the offensive side of the ball. He would be an excellent secondary ball-handler whether its coming off the bench, or alleviating some pressure off of Ivey or Cunningham on the starting unit.

The reality is that the Pistons may have missed a valuable opportunity to move off of Beasley at the trade deadline and now may leave the situation empty-handed in all of the madness. It’s a tough pill to swallow but Trajan Langdon has no time to let that stew and must make some tough decisions in the upcoming week in order to push the team in the right direction. Ex- Michigan players Caris Levert and Duncan Robinson could be viable suitors to replace Beasley. In addition former Pistons Luke Kennard and Bruce Brown will available this Summer.
