Beanball War: Jose Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Plunked as Toronto Blue Jays Beat Cleveland Guardians

Baseball has several unwritten rules, and Jose Ramirez knew that a fastball was coming for him.

In Toronto’s 6-0 win over Cleveland on Wednesday, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got hit by a pitch from Tanner Bibee in the third inning.

Toronto manager John Schneider pulled Vlad Jr. from the game.

Ramirez was in the line of fire, and sure enough, he got drilled in the arm by Toronto starter Kevin Gausman (6-6).

Ramirez had to leave the game as well, but both superstars should be fine.

Guardians manager Steven Vogt was angry about the location of Gausman’s pitch.

“You’re going to hit somebody on purpose, you hit him in the hip, not the arm,” Vogt said.

COMEDY OF ERRORS

Cleveland first baseman Kyle Manzardo tied a major-league record by committing three errors in the third inning. Toronto took advantage and jumped to a 3-0 lead.

Nick Lukes hit a two-run single. Then, Myles Straw scored from third when Manzardo failed to catch a pickoff throw. Manzardo added a throwing error on the same play.

Steven Kwan caught the error bug in the ninth inning, when the Blue Jays scored their other three runs.

Alejandro Kirk hit an RBI single to left, but Kwan’s throwing error allowed two more runs to score.

Cleveland’s offense wasn’t any better than its defense. The Guardians had two hits: a double by Kwan and a single by Manzardo.

MORE BIRDS ARE COMING

The St. Louis Cardinals will begin a three-game series with the Guardians tonight at 7:10.

Luis Ortiz (4-8) will start for the Guardians against Sonny Gray (7-2) for St. Louis.
