Doyle homers but Rockies collect just two hits in 3-1 loss to the Dodgers

At the halfway point of the 2025 season, the Rockies suffered yet another loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers, their 10th straight dating back to 2024. It was yet another sweep and the Rockies now sit at 18-63 on the season.

The game began auspiciously for Colorado as center fielder Brenton Doyle leapt in the air to connect with a Clayton Kershaw fastball in the second inning, delivering a solo home run that gave the Rockies a 1–0 lead. Doyle’s sixth homer of the season was his first in over 90 plate appearances and was a positive sign for the struggling outfielder. Unfortunately, it would be the only highlight as it was the lone run the Rockies would manage.

Kershaw, nearing his 3,000th strikeout milestone, settled into his rhythm from the left side. Over six innings, he yielded just two hits (Doyle’s homer and a filler), walked one, and struck out five, amassing 69 pitches—showcasing both efficiency and poise. By the end of the afternoon, he was just three strikeouts shy of the historic mark.

Austin Gomber, making his third start of the season for the Rockies, was also impressive as he worked through five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out just one. His outing was steady, albeit unspectacular. The lone run against Gomber came in the third inning when Miguel Rojas led off with a double and came in to score on a single by Mookie Betts to tie the game 1-1.

The Dodgers would squeak ahead in the sixth inning when reliever Angel Chivilli surrendered a leadoff double to Betts, who later scored on a Freddie Freeman single to put Los Angeles up 2-1. They would add an insurance run in the seventh off the bat of Shohei Ohtani, who blasted his 28th home run of the season to seal the 3-1 victory.

The Rockies’ offense managed just two hits on the day, and just four base runners in total. Both hits came against Kershaw, the second by Ryan Ritter in the third inning. The Dodgers’ bullpen issued two walks and struck out three, with Tanner Scott securing his seventh save of the season in the ninth inning.

The Rockies managed to bring the tying run in the ninth after Tyler Freeman walked to lead off the inning. However, Jordan Beck struck out, bringing Thairo Estrada to the plate. Estrada laced a ball to center field that looked to have a chance to fall, but center fielder Andy Pages chased it down and quickly fired a bullet to first base, doubling off Freeman and ending the game.

Colorado nows heads to Milwaukee for a weekend set before returning to Coors Field on July 1.
