The Red Sox Should Extend Alex Bregman
Well, this is a pleasant surprise. With the team playing a series in California taking on the Los Angeles Angels, agent Scott Boras made an appearance. There was a photo of him and he was standing behind Roman Anthony. For Red Sox fans sake, you had to be thinking, “don’t you dare go near him” because then the price tag jumps up.
However, he was there due to the fact that he represents Alex Bregman. According to Will Fleming on WEEI, Bregman is open to negotiations. Bregman signed a three year deal, worth $40 million per season, but has an opt out after this season. The Red Sox shouldn’t waste any time and hammer this out and get it done.
Red Sox Need to Extend Bregman
When the Red Sox opted to part ways with Rafael Devers, it signaled that there is a new era underway in Boston for this baseball team. The keys have been handed over to the younger guys. This team was young even with Devers, but now they are even younger. Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell (in Triple A), and Roman Anthony, are the present and future of this team. They also have Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Carlos Narvaez. The point is, they are young.
Not only are they young, but they do things that show how young they are. They are still learning at the big league level, but they make many mistakes, whether it’s base running miscues or errors. Fundamental baseball needs to be a thing snd one thing that can help stabilize that is a veteran. Enter Bregman.
Bregman is a leader and brings a winning pedigree to the clubhouse. Devers was the final piece of that 2018 winning team and this young team needs that type of presence. Also, while Bregman has been out with a quad injury, he has been Simeon in the dugout and has been working with the younger guys and being a presence during games. The fact that these young players can lean on Bregman is huge. Take Campbell for example. He got paid, made the Opening Day roster, but got sent down. He could be down on himself, but instead has positivity and confidence and eluded to Bregman for the inspiration.
Bregman told him the story of his slow start, and just how rookies have ups and downs and it’s okay. Just shows the type of presence that he has one these young guys. That’s the tangible stuff and the type of clubhouse guy and leader Manager Alex Cora can turn to. But now, the on the field stuff.
Bregman is the perfect piece to this puzzle. Signing him signals that he is the third baseman of the present and foreseeable future. Not to mention, it allows everyone to slot where they need to be. Marcelo Mayer has been great manning the hot corner, but he can slot to his natural position at short stop. If Trevor Story opts back in, the Red Sox can slot him to second base and then first base remains a mystery but could be Campbell in the end.
Lastly, he is the perfect bat for this team and for the park he plays in. Bregman mashes at Fenway Park and his right handed bat will make a living hitting that Green Monster. Before the injury, Bregman was playing at an MVP level. He was hitting .299 with a .938 OPS. He likely would have set a career high in doubles this season and was just a perfect fit. He was the right handed bat they have needed and will need moving forward.
Bregman is a leader, a complete player, and the perfect person to help lead this young team moving forward. Talk about setting the tone and building the culture. He is the perfect guy to build around.
