King of the Ring Flashback: Triple H Takes the Throne and Keeps Moving Up (1997)

Hunter Hearst Helmsley won the 1997 King of the Ring tournament, and he just couldn’t stop winning.

He won the WWF title for the first time in 1999, and he married the boss’s daughter later that year.

Twenty-six years later, Triple H is running the WWE.

This story almost never started. Triple H lost his King of the Ring qualifying match to Ahmed Johnson when Chyna’s interference caused a disqualification.

But due an injury to Vader, Helmsley got another chance. He beat Crush to qualify for the tournament.

THE PAY-PER-VIEW

Triple H faced Ahmed Johnson again to open the pay-per-view, which took place in Providence, R.I. Chyna’s interference worked this time, and HHH won with the Pedigree.

Mankind won the other semifinal match, beating Jerry “The King” Lawler with the Mandible Claw.

The Hart Foundation trio of Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart & Davey Boy Smith beat The Legion of Doom & Sid. Owen pinned Sid with a top-rope sunset flip.

Goldust defeated Crush with a DDT.

Chyna helped Hunter win the crown by smashing Mankind in the head with the king’s scepter.

Unlike Steve Austin one year earlier, Triple H wore the crown during his coronation ceremony.

MY ENEMY IS MY PARTNER

Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin hated each other, but they were the WWF tag team champions after a win over The Hart Foundation.

They battled each other at the pay-per-view, and the match ended in a no-contest after Michaels attacked two referees.

After the match, Austin and Michaels hilariously walked off together, each keeping a wary eye on the other.

In the main event, The Undertaker retained the WWF title by defeating Faarooq. That was former WCW champion Ron Simmons, who was the leader of the WWF’s Nation of Domination.
