Slade Cecconi Leads Cleveland Guardians to Victory in Sacramento Series
Slade Cecconi is showing Cleveland Guardians fans that the Josh Naylor trade didn’t turn out so bad.
Unlike Andres Gimenez in Toronto, Josh Naylor is playing very well since the Guardians traded him to Arizona.
His power numbers are down (nine homers), but Naylor is battling .303 and has 49 RBI.
Cecconi was injured for the early part of the season, but he pitched seven shutout innings as Cleveland beat the Athletics 3-0 on Sunday in Sacramento.
THE SECOND INNING, AGAIN
After scoring four runs in the second inning on Saturday, the Guardians had another strong second inning on Sunday.
Gabriel Arias singled to score Angel Martinez with the first run of the game.
Nolan Jones followed with a double down the right-field line to score Arias. Jones advanced to third on the throw to the plate.
Cleveland was unable to bring Jones home, as A’s starter JP Sears (5-7) struck out Austin Hedges and Steven Kwan.
In the fifth inning, David Fry singled to left field to score Kwan and extend Cleveland’s lead to 3-0.
SUPERB PITCHING
Cecconi gave up six hits in his seven innings of work against the A’s young power hitters. Cade Smith and Tim Herrin got through the eighth inning.
Emmanuel Clase loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but he struck out Max Muncy version 2.0 and got Lawrence Butler to ground out to second base to end the game.
Clase picked up his 18th save and lowered his ERA to 3.48.
HEADING HOME
The Guardians will return to Progressive Field on Tuesday to open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Logan Allen (5-4) will throw the first pitch at 6:40 p.m.
