San Francisco Giants Avoid Sweep in 2-1 Victory over Cleveland Guardians

Sweeping the Giants in San Francisco would have been impressive, but the Cleveland Guardians couldn’t pull it off.

The Giants snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win on Thursday afternoon at Oracle Park.

Gavin Williams pitched six shutout innings for Cleveland, giving up just two hits and a walk.

Williams induced a double-play ground ball to end the fifth inning.

He finished the sixth with a “strike him out, throw him out” double play, as Bo Naylor gunned down Heliot Ramos trying to steal second.

LIMITED OFFENSE

At the same time, San Francisco starter Logan Webb (7-5) was keeping the Cleveland hitters in check. He pitched seven solid innings and struck out nine.

Carlos Santana gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a single to bring Steven Kwan home.

Kwan, who grew up in the Bay Area, had three hits to improve his batting average to .300.

THE WELL RUNS DRY

Cleveland reliever Matt Festa (1-1) pitched in the first two games of the series, so maybe trying him again wasn’t a good idea.

He gave up a hit and a walk in the seventh inning while retiring the other batter he faced.

Nic Enright relieved Festa and gave up a two-run double to pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores.

Cleveland was unable to mount a comeback against Giants relievers Randy Rodriguez and Camilo Doval, who recorded his 11th save.

WHERE ARE THOSE A’S?

The Guardians will start a three-game series against the Athletics tomorrow in (checks notes …) Sacramento, Calif.

Tanner Bibee (4-6) will start for the Guardians against the Athletics’ Jeffrey Springs (5-5). Fire up some coffee, because the game will start at 10:05 p.m. Eastern.
