They Might Be Giants: Daniel Schneemann Powers Cleveland Guardians Over San Francisco
Legendary Cleveland sportswriter Terry Pluto recently discussed the Cleveland Guardians’ “blah identity,” which is understandable when discussing a .500 team.
Since then, the Guardians has won a pair of games in San Francisco, including a 4-2 victory last night at Oracle Park.
Justin Verlander, the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer, took the mound for the Giants. He was seeking his 263th career victory.
Jose Ramirez made life tougher for Verlander with a single in the first inning to score Kyle Manzardo.
IN THE SCHNEE HOURS
Daniel Schneeman blasted a three-run, opposite-field homer to left center in the fourth inning, scoring Lane Thomas and Carlos Santana.
Logan Allen protected the lead to improve his record to 5-4. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up four hits.
The Giants’ two runs came on a 420-foot bomb by left fielder Heliot Ramos, his 12th of the season.
STRENGTH OF THE TEAM
Cleveland’s bullpen is starting to regain its dominance from last year. Matt Festa, Cade Smith, Tim Herrin, and Emmanuel Clase kept the Giants off the scoreboard for the final 3 2/3 innings.
Clase picked up his 16th save and lowered his ERA to 3.69. He won’t reach 0.61 like last year, but he’s heading in the right direction.
The Guardians will go for the sweep today at 4:05 p.m. Eastern. Gavin Williams (5-3) will start for Cleveland against the Giants’ Logan Webb (6-5).
