Should Cody Rhodes Challenge John Cena at SummerSlam

King and Queen of the Ring is right around the corner in Saudi Arabia. The winners of the two tournaments will challenge their brand’s champion at the first-ever 2-night SummerSlam event. And how the tournament is shaking up could provide the opportunity for a WrestleMania rematch.

One year after “finishing his story” at WrestleMania 40 against Roman Reigns by becoming WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes would lose that very same title to John Cena, who has a newfound perspective on life and the WWE Universe.

The emotional rollercoaster ride fans have been on from rejoicing to Cody Rhodes finally overcoming the Tribal Chief, to John Cena’s heel turn and record-breaking 17th world championship reign, it has been quite the journey.

Cody Rhodes finds himself in the King of the Ring Tournament and after a few encounters with the WWE Champion, he has an opportunity to win the tournament and get a rematch against Cena at SummerSlam.

The question isn’t should Cody Rhodes challenge John Cena one more time on Cena’s farewell tour this year. We will inevitably see these two square off again, but is SummerSlam the best opportunity to do that?

SummerSlam is arguably the second-biggest event of the year behind WrestleMania. With the historic event moving to two nights, it makes sense to have the biggest possible main event on the card. Cena and Rhodes II would be a headline, marquee main event.

We have seen many SummerSlams be headlined by WrestleMania rematches. If this is the route WWE goes, they have done a good job to not immediately jump into the rematch. They let this feud breathe by occupying John Cena with the likes of Randy Orton, R-Truth, and tag team matches. They let Cody Rhodes take a much-needed break as he often travels to both Raw, Smackdown, all the house shows, and still makes time for his media appearances. Years after Cena made all those towns, Rhodes has stepped into that role with his best foot forward.

The big question is how do you see the second-half of the year going, and the closing days of John Cena’s career? I would imagine Triple H and creative carefully crafted Cena’s farewell tour to include when he would drop the WWE Championship.

Does Cody Rhodes need to beat John Cena to regain the WWE Championship? Does it need to be someone else? Does Rhodes beat Cena at SummerSlam for Cena to have a redemptive arc with the WWE Universe? Does it take the entire year for Rhodes to regain the WWE Championship, potentially in Cena’s last match ever?

These are all questions WWE has likely wrestled with and came to a consensus months ago. The card is always subject to change as the business is fluid. But one thing is for sure, WWE pays attention to the details in regard to John Cena and his farewell tour.

Should Rhodes challenge for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam? That’s for WWE to decide but unless there is another cheap way for Cena to cling onto his championship, I would keep these two away from each other until Cody Rhodes can pick up his pen again and continue writing his story.

A loss for Rhodes would hurt him, while a third installment of this feud would waste a date for John Cena. So the next time we see Cody Rhodes and John Cena will hopefully be the last one of its kind.

The last time is now, and Cody’s last time might be at SummerSlam if he wins the King of the Ring Tournament for the first time in his career.
