Seattle Mariners Score Walk-Off Win over Emmanuel Clase, Cleveland Guardians

Closers only make headlines when they lose.

Emmanuel Clase has been his old dominant self after a disastrous April, but the Seattle Mariners beat him and the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 last night.

The Guardians are falling into the unfortunate pattern of losing the first two games of a series before desperately trying to win the final game.

That’s not a road map to the playoffs, as the Guardians have a record of 35-34.

BIBEE VS. KIRBY

Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee and Seattle’s George Kirby posted similar statistics, each giving up two runs in five innings.

The Mariners scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by ā€œThe Big Dumperā€ Cal Raleigh and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Polanco.

Cleveland slowly fought back and took the lead, starting with an RBI double by Nolan Jones in the fourth inning. Jones is getting better, pumping up his batting average to .220 with a pair of hits.

Jose Ramirez tied the game with his 13th home run of the season, a 379-foot blast down the right field line. Ramirez extended his on-base streak to 39 games.

The Guardians took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when Daniel Schneemann scored on a wild pitch by Gabe Speier.

BULLPEN RATING: 75 PERCENT

Michael Festa, Hunter Gaddis, and Cade Smith preserved Cleveland’s 3-2 lead, each providing a scoreless inning of relief.

Clase entered the game in the ninth and got himself into a based-loaded jam. He threw a game-tying wild pitch.

Polanco was the walk-off hero for the Mariners, as he singled to score Miles Mastrobuoni.

Once again, Cleveland will try to salvage the final game of the series before heading to San Francisco to face the red-hot Giants.

Luis Ortiz (3-7) will start for the Guardians against Seattle’s Emerson Hancock (2-2). Game time is 4:10 p.m. Eastern.
