Bullpen follies hand 10-7 loss to Rockies
For the second straight night the Colorado Rockies dropped a heartbreaker at home on June 11, falling 10–7 to the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field. In a game marked by big swings, defensive miscues, and late-inning fireworks, the Giants staged a furious comeback to extend their dominance and deal another blow to the Rockies’ season as the bullpen faltered once again late in the game.
The Giants grabbed a 2–0 lead in the 1st inning behind a towering two-run homer from Willy Adames off Rockies’ lefty Kyle Freeland after a Jung Hoo Lee triple. Another run in the third off of Freeland made it a 3-0 ballgame as the Rockies struggled the first time through against Robbie Ray. However, Colorado responded with aggression in the bottom of the inning.
Hunter Goodman clubbed an RBI double in the third to ignite the rally. A groundout by Thairo Estrada and a Keston Hiura single pushed the Rockies ahead 4–3. The Rockies kept the pressure on Ray, driving him from the game after four innings and added two more runs through the sixth inning, with Ryan Ritter’s triple being the highlight knock.
Meanwhile, Freeland settled in with a quality start, allowing just three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over six innings. He had finally gotten some run support and left with the win intact, but the offense settled down and the bullpen struggled. After a clean seventh from Juan Mejia, veteran righty Tyler Kinley struggled in the eighth. Kinely recorded just one out and allowed four runs on four hits as the Giants just kept making contact. Zach Agnos, a night after struggling on Tuesday, got out of the eighth and began the ninth inning, but managed just to record one out as he issued two walks and allowed three runs on just one hit.
The Rockies managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth thanks to Goodman’s 11th home run of the season, but the team got two men on with two outs before Orlando Arcia grounded out softly to end the inning and fall 10-7.
The Rockies close out the series with Antonio Senzatela on the hill without the aid of an opener, facing off against Hayden Birdsong.
