Could We See A Head Coach Trade In The NBA This Summer?
Many people who watch sports are unaware that coaches can be traded just like players.
In the NBA, the last time a head coach was traded was in July 2014, when the Bucks acquired the coaching rights of Jason Kidd from the Nets in exchange for two second-round picks.
Flash forward to the summer of 2025, and ironically, once again, Kidd is in the extremely rare head coaching trade rumors.
After surprisingly firing Tom Thibodeau following a run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks are reportedly looking for a proven new voice to try and lead them to the title.
The only problem with that is this offseasonās coaching carousel has just one seat left, and itās the Knicks, and there seemingly arenāt many unemployed coaches who fit New Yorkās desires looking for a seat on that carousel.
Former Nuggets head coach and 2023 NBA champion Mike Malone is seemingly the most and possibly only logical choice as far as coaches without jobs go.
However, other than that, if the Knicks want to get what they want, they may have to fork over some assets to acquire a coach from another team.
Insert Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who reportedly did not see eye to eye with the organization about being the āspokespersonā for the trade that sent superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
In the last few days, reports have been floated around that the Knicks and Kidd have mutual interest in a partnership.
Although Kidd being traded by the Mavs over to the Knicks is a possibility, itās certainly far from likely.
Any potential interview that the Knicks could conduct with Kidd would have to be approved by Dallas, something that they likely would not do.
Kidd signed a multi-year extension with the Mavs after their finals run in 2024, and getting out of that would require him to resign.
In the event that Kidd did resign from Dallas and join New York, the NBA would almost certainly bring forth questions of tampering.
However, you can never say never, especially when the dots are as simple to connect as Kidd and the Knicks.
