The 2025 Libs are Playing like its 1997
The Liberty’s first game towards the Commissioner’s Cup tipped off this past weekend against the Connecticut Sun, their closest geographical team and current last-place team in the Eastern Conference. This club has already set a new WNBA record with nineteen three-pointers made in their blowout win against the Chicago Sky earlier this season. New York’s revamped five-out offense has it launching from long range with no cares left with each shot taken. This weekend’s 100-52 point victory over the Sun watched them tie that record and set a franchise record for the steepest lead held by the team over their opponent. While many seem to think that this 2025 Liberty team is destined to repeat their championship win again this season, this team that has already started breaking records will continue playing to the best of their abilities to get the Seafoam Army back to the promised land. As they continue to break records, they are on the precipice of setting a new franchise record that many Liberty fans did not expect to see broken, one set by the inaugural Liberty team from 1997.

When the WNBA was first developed, the Liberty stood tall as one of the eight original teams before the turn of the century. The Liberty has been truly blessed with some of the greatest WNBA players, especially in franchise history. Some of the Liberty’s initial roster consisted of two players who, to this day, are still held in high regard not just in the franchise but throughout the league at large. Two players still revered by many across the league are Rebecca Lobo and Theresa Weatherspoon, who were introduced as franchise players for the Liberty, and the logo and name were also introduced. The Liberty got a taste of postseason basketball that first season, placing second in the Eastern Conference and making it to the WNBA finals. That team stormed the WNBA community, starting their inaugural season 7-0.
Flash forward twenty-eight years, and this franchise, which just won its first championship in its twenty-seven years, is starting to bang down the records and precedents set by the team’s cornerstone players from those first few seasons of the WNBA, and with their 7-0 start, have extended their point differential to plus-144. That isn’t just the best differential in the league, it’s the best through seven games in WNBA history. From the beginning of the league to now, as the league begins expanding due to the growing fan base and interest in the sport, the core members of the Brooklyn team continue to cement themselves in history, just like Lobo, TSpoon, and Sue Wicks, which is nothing short of beautiful. With the game’s evolution and the WNBA reaching new heights, it’s been nice to see Liberty hold its own without any key younger players. Their franchise’s first overall draft pick from 2020, Sabrina Iounescu, has proven to be one of the wisest investments in the entire league. Names like Iounescu, Stewart, Jones, and now Cloud are becoming synonymous with the same as the Liberty women who cemented themselves as household names when the league first started, and all these women are only reaching the beginning of their prime. This team has built an atmosphere that coaches and players dream of being a part of individually or as a group.
That team mindset on and off the court is a key component of this core’s capability to go all the way once again. Many fans speculate that this group of women is the most likely group to repeat, with only a few teams able to do so in WNBA history. However, with how cohesive this unit has been, it’s no surprise that people say there’s a chance the Liberty can go back-to-back. New York’s start this year bears a striking resemblance to the 2023 Aces. That Las Vegas team had a permanent chip on its shoulder after a low preseason ranking in 2022 and felt it needed to validate itself throughout the 2023 season, despite winning a title the year before. Last year, the championship team faced the same criticism as they defeated the Minnesota Lynx by a very slim margin, and they’re looking to prove this year that there was no mistake in their Finals win last year. Interestingly, this might not just be a repeat year championship-wise, but the same matchup could meet again in the Finals this year. The only other undefeated team left in the W this year is the Lynx, and with their schedule proving to be just the slightest bit more difficult to start the season, many have them sit atop the WNBA power rankings, above the Liberty. The one thing that can set these two powerhouses apart is their consistency. While the Lynx have been playing well, they haven’t seen the offensive differential that the Liberty have, but again, there’s no denying the club’s talent as they’re also undefeated. With each game, the Liberty gets stronger, but Minnesota doesn’t seem to have the same luck, and that edge of a starting five who play together each start could be just the thing that could push New York above the Lynx yet again.

The Liberty next travels down to the nation’s capital to play the Mystics again, with tip-off set for 7:30 pm on Thursday. After that, they return home to take on the struggling Chicago Sky again, this time at Barclays Center, and after that, play a potentially Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever, who do not seem to know how to maintain the same offensive prowess with Clark not on the floor. While no one wants to get ahead of themselves, there is a very good chance that the Liberty could supersede the franchise record for consecutive undefeated games played, and then some. This club currently leads the entire W in several stats, some of which are points per game, assists per game, and offensive points per game (they also are tied for third in rebounds per game), so whoever will need to play this Liberty roster in a series format will have a lot to go up against.
