Scottie Scheffler heating up heading into the US Open, wins again at The Memorial

Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

Scottie Scheffler won yet another golf tournament, and this one a signature event.

If you’re a fan of the PGA Tour, or even golf, you would have stopped me after the word “won” in the previous statement. Why? Because Scottie Scheffler has won so much the past three seasons, him being on the leaderboard makes it feel as if it’s inevitable he will be winning the golf tournament.

The most recent victory for Scheffler came at Muirfield Village at the Memorial, a PGA Tour signature event with large purses and a smaller field. Scheffler stalked Ben Griffin on Thursday and Friday, but it was Saturday where he made his move. Once he obtained the lead, you knew it was over.

However, that doesn’t mean his playing competitors are just packing up the clubs if Scheffler takes the lead. Ben Griffin had this to say before the final round of the tournament.

“Obviously, Scottie Scheffler’s the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat,” Griffin said on the eve of the final round.

Well, not this week.

While we’ve all heard and read the Scheffler soundbites about his family, faith and work ethic, sometimes it is more valuable to hear what his peers are saying about his game which are more poignant.

“The guy’s relentless,” said Sepp Straka (70), who finished third. “He loves competition, and he doesn’t like giving up shots.”

“What impresses me the most is his club face control is elite,” said Jordan Spieth, who finished T-7. “It’s maybe the best there’s ever been as far as club face control. So his consistency is ridiculous. And then that just leads to his distance control being phenomenal.”

This tournament isn’t just another signature event, it is Jack Nicklaus’s tournament in his home state of Ohio. Nicklaus is a mainstay at the tournament, and is always there to greet the winner on the 18th green after the tournament has concluded. Following the on-course festivities, Jack heads to the press tent to answer questions from the media with the tournament’s champion. Here is what Nicklaus said about Scheffler’s latest win, his second straight at the Memorial:

“That’s what the best player in the world does. He comes out and does things the right way and manages it, and he sees who is on the leaderboard and who is challenging him,” Nicklaus said. “I mean, Ben Griffin’s a nice player, Sepp Straka is a nice player, Nick Taylor is a nice player. Those were all the guys that were there basically coming down the stretch. But he knows that those guys, you know, are not in his league.”

“He doesn’t want to brag about what he does. But he has the ability to bring his level to whatever level it needs to be. That’s what good players do. And, you know, he’s not a good player, he’s a great player. I mean, look at the record that he has had the last few years. It’s unbelievable.”

High praise not just from Nicklaus, but also those who are given the task of competing with Scheffler on a near weekly basis. The Memorial is a great tune up for the field as they get ready for the US Open in two weeks. Will Scheffler win another major, yet his first US Open? When you’re talking about Oakmont Country Club anything is possible, but you’d be foolish to bet on anyone else at this juncture with Scheffler playing at such a high level, three wins in his last four starts.
