Gavin Williams Dominates Los Angeles Angels as Cleveland Guardians Win Series
Every baseball season has turning points, and the Cleveland Guardians may look back at the series with the Los Angeles Angels as one of them.
Cleveland’s comeback victory on Saturday, followed by a 4-2 victory on Sunday, allowed the Guardians to keep pace in the competitive AL Central Division.
The Guardians went 3-3 against the Dodgers and Angels, putting them in second place. Detroit leads Cleveland by six games, Kansas City by seven, and Minnesota by eight.
GAVIN IS LOCKED IN
Gavin Williams (5-3) gave up only one hit in 6 2/3 innings of work. Zach Neto broke up Williams’ no-hitter with a single in the sixth inning.
This allowed the Guardians to build a 4-0 lead before hanging on for the victory.
Steven Kwan opened the scoring for Cleveland with a sacrifice fly to score Gabriel Arias in the third inning.
Jose Ramirez hit his 11th homer of the year, a 397-foot blast to right center field, to increase the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning.
THE “REAL” NOLAN JONES?
Cleveland fans were puzzled when the Guardians reacquired Nolan Jones just before the start of the season. That didn’t change when he struggled to hit for two months.
Now, Jones is finally swinging a hot bat. He went 2-for-3 and improved his batting average to .214. Jones singled in the fourth to score Kyle Manzardo and Bo Naylor.
The Angels scored their two runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Luis Rengifo and Mike Trout.
Cleveland’s bullpen dominated the Angels for the second day in a row. Hunter Gaddis, Michael Festa, and Emmanuel Clase kept the Halos off the board for the last 2 1/3 innings.
Clase earned his 13th save and lowered his ERA to 3.96.
Tanner Bibee (4-5) will start the Guardians’ next game at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday on TBS. Carlos Rodon (7-3) will start for New York.
