Rockies stun Yankees with 3-2 victory at Coors Field
On Friday night, the Colorado Rockies stunned the baseball world with a 3–2 victory over the New York Yankees at Coors Field, snapping a five-game losing streak and delivering just their ninth win of the season. Facing a Yankees team that had won six of its previous seven games, the Rockies showcased resilience and timely execution to secure the win in a 3-2 outcome.
The Yankees struck first in the opening inning. Aaron Judge singled and later scored on Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI triple, giving New York an early 1–0 lead. However, Colorado responded in the fourth inning when Kyle Farmer’s RBI single brought home Ryan McMahon, tying the game at 1–1.
Judge reclaimed the lead for the Yankees in the fifth with his 17th home run of the season, a solo shot that put New York ahead 2–1. However, the Rockies answered in the bottom half of the inning. After singles by Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman, McMahon delivered a two-run double off reliever Tim Hill, propelling Colorado to a 3–2 advantage.
The Rockies were buoyed by starting pitcher Tanner Gordon who earned his first major league win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. Making somewhat of an emergency start after Chase Dollander landed on the injured list on Thursday, Gordon proved quite effective against a tough Yankees lineup. The quality start was magnified as the Rockies’ bullpen held firm, with Jake Bird, Seth Halvorsen, and Zach Agnos combining for three scoreless innings. Agnos secured his third save of the season.
Defensively, Colorado executed key plays, including two double plays that stifled potential Yankees rallies. The Rockies’ performance was a complete team effort, combining effective pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense to overcome one of the league’s top teams. All three of the Rockies’ runs came with two outs.
With the win, the Rockies improved to 9–42, while the Yankees fell to 30–20. The teams will continue their series on Saturday at Coors Field as Kyle Freeland squares off against Max Fried.
