Red Sox Could Face Uphill Climb If Bregman is out Long-Term
Oh boy, here we go again. The Red Sox will once again face adversity and this time it comes to their best overall player. After hitting a deep single, Alex Bregman injured his leg while rounding first base. He came out immediately and went right down the tunnel. The severity of the injury remains to be seen, but this poses more questions for a roster already littered with them.
Bregman Injury Causes Concern
This is not ideal if you are the Boston Red Sox. Bregman has been arguably the teams most valuable player and has been great for them overall. He is hitting .297 with a .935 OPS and has made a killing with the Green Monster on his side. He has been able to help solidify the third base position defensively and has been a great presence in the clubhouse. But now he could be out long-term.
This poses more questions to this roster. You already have rookie Kristian Campbell learning first base, while still seeing games in center field and aiming to get better at second base. You are already down Triston Casas for the entire season and that position is murky as it is. They’ve made very minor moves, as nobody is trading anyone and the prices are high this time of the year.
The fact of the matter is, you can’t afford to lose Bregman. Trevor Story is in a massive slump and the rotation has questions of its own. But with no Casas and potentially no Bregman, how does this team weather what’s already been a crazy storm?
How they Can Get Through It
There is a world where Bregman is good to play in the coming days. If not, then the team really needs to get together and come up with a plan to weather this storm. You can bide your time with first like you are, but you have to replace Bregman for the time being.
Well, they could do the thing and ask Rafael Devers to get his glove and go back to third base. How that goes remains to be seen. He already was adamant about not playing first base and he had settled in nicely to his DH role and has been the Red Sox best bat in the month of May.
Also, Marcelo Mayer is ready for the show. He is the only player taken in the top ten in his draft class not to be called up yet. Here’s his chance. Mayer has shown promise in Triple A, having over an .800 OPS and is hitting the ball very well. He has played third base before, so the shoe does fit quite nicely.
What the front office does remains to be seen, but all eyes will be on this news and the extent of it.
