Liberty Set New WNBA Record in their Win over the Chicago Sky
Last night was the second game of the Liberty’s season, and they did not disappoint. This time last year, the Liberty had one of the busiest schedules and had already played five games in the 2024 season; this year, they have been able to ease into the season with just two games thus far. Last weekend, their first game against their rival, the Las Vegas Aces, was as close as it could get, with the new Aces starting five really giving the Liberty girls a run for their money until the last quarter, when the Libs started running away offensively. Ultimately, one of the latest additions, Natasha Cloud, won the game with a standout performance. In addition to her stellar defense, she contributed 22 points, six rebounds, nine assists, three steals, and two blocks in the win. There wasn’t much shock in the Liberty’s opening weekend success, and with their WNBA regular-season record of nineteen 3-pointers in their victory over the Sky last night, they continue to shine as Chicago’s team just couldn’t get it together.

While last night was a killer start for the Liberty, their opponents in the 99-74 win have been one of the season’s biggest surprises so far. Angel Reese, who is not known for her offensive prowess outside of the paint, grabbed twelve boards last night in her comfort zone within the arc, going 0-for-7 shooting from within four feet of the net, which is tied for the most misses in the last ten years of the WNBA. Reese’s streak of sinking at least one basket that began during her college career back in 2021 was ended last night after going 0-for-8 shooting and only scoring two points, ending the 136-game streak set during her college career. It was nice to see former Liberty familiar face and fourteen-year veteran Courtney Vandersloot play well with fourteen points last night, despite hoping the Sky would lose, many Liberty fans were hoping to see a performance like last night’s for Sloot. She did not let either fan base down with her valiant effort and a commanding performance for the Sky. While they hired their head coach this last offseason, it’s been a tough start to the Tyler Marsh era for the Sky. The league did them no favors by having their first two games of the season be against the Indiana Fever and New York, but the team is not clicking yet, allowing the Liberty to capitalize and give them their second loss. The most concerning part of all this is that within these first two losses, the team has only scored sixty points, which is the worst point differential through he first two games of a season in WNBA history.
The Liberty set a record high of nineteen threes due to Chicago’s inability to defend. They are shooting 32.4% from the field while allowing opponents to shoot 50.4%, hence the Libs’ ability to get just about whatever they wanted from beyond the arc. Tash Cloud came in clutch for the Liberty again, leading the way with four 3-pointers and eighteen points last night. Eight of nine Liberty players who attempted a 3-pointer made at least one as they finished last night’s contest, going 19 for 34, which is still over 50%. Returning to Cloud’s performance, she made 4 of 5 from deep and had eight assists on the night. Sabrina Ionescu scored sixteen points, Stewie got twelve, and JJ scored eleven points for New York. Noticeably coming off the bench was another player who had a fantastic game last night. Guard Kennedy Burke had seventeen points and was 4 of 4 on 3s, being a true difference maker in the Liberty secondary.
When the buzzer rang throughout the Wintrust Arena to signify the end of the first quarter, the Liberty were up 28-23 and 36-30 in the second before closing the half on a 17-2 run. Chicago did manage to find some wind for their sails to begin the second quarter, scoring the first eight points of the third, but they never got closer than a 13-point deficit. Cloud said, “Don’t worry,” though, because as soon as Chicago got some steam in the third, she quickly shot them down, beginning the fourth quarter by scoring eight points in a 13-4 run in the first two and a half minutes for an 88-58 lead. The game ended with a bang when the Liberty managed to push their score up to 99, with forty-six points in the second half of the game.
After two electric wins to begin their championship season, the Liberty will move on to one of the hottest teams in the W, the Indiana Fever, this weekend. Tip-off starts at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow in Indiana, and the Liberty is projected to win over the Fever at a 60% rate. Caitlin Clark’s Fever is some primetime entertainment, with all eyes on Clark every time she laces up. The Fever are currently 2-1 with a dominant performance over Chicago to start the 2025 season, a one-point loss to Atlanta in game two, and a five-point win over the Dream in Atlanta. The Liberty are hoping to have the same success as they did last year against the Fever, securing (hopefully) another win, but if there’s anything that the Fever have already proved, which is worrisome for us Liberty fans, is that this team, with Clark and new head coach Stephanie White at the helm can keep up with the big dogs. Tune in tomorrow on CBS to see which team will continue their hot start to the 2025 season.
