How 2024 College Football Playoff Looked Under New Model
The College Football Playoff continues to adapt and will take on a new format once again in 2025.
Just one year after moving to a 12-team playoff system, the playoff will move to a straight-seeding model. The top four teams will earn a first-round bye and will be seeded by the selection committee.
“After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP management committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment,” Rich Clark, executive director of the CFP, said in a statement. “This change will continue to allow guaranteed access to the Playoff by rewarding teams for winning their conference championship, but it will also allow us to construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field during the entire regular season.”
The playoff will still feature the five highest-ranked conference champions. Last year, the field gave the four highest-ranked champions the top seeds in the bracket.
This new format impacts Notre Dame in a big way as the Irish will now be eligible to receive a first-round bye. Having been independent, Notre Dame would not have a chance to win a conference title and earn a bye in the previous model.
This decision comes after Ohio State faced Oregon in the second round of the playoff and ran away early. This brought up the question of whether the Ducks got a bad draw given their performance in the Big Ten Championship Game.
