Purple Rain: Cleveland Guardians Earn Soggy Split with Minnesota Twins
Minneapolis baseball fans wished for the return of the Metrodome, as three inches of rain fell while the Twins were trying to play the Cleveland Guardians this week.
The teams finally completed Monday’s game on Wednesday, with the Twins winning 6-5.
The Guardians bounced back to win the regularly scheduled game 5-1.
Before we dive into the action, let’s relive the glorious collapse of the Metrodome roof.
TWINS WIN 6-5
The action resumed in the fourth inning with the Twins leading 2-1. Carlos Santana tied the game for Cleveland with a solo home run.
Minnesota jumped back out to a 4-2 lead when Kody Clemens (Roger’s son) hit an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harrison Bader.
In the eighth, Bader struck again with an RBI single off Kolby Allard to increase the lead to 5-2.
The Guardians rallied to tie the game with three runs in the ninth. Nolan Jones hit an RBI single, and Bo Naylor bashed a two-run double.
However, the Twins walked it off in the bottom of the ninth when Clemens hit an RBI double off Cade Smith.
GUARDIANS WIN 5-1
At this point, the Guardians hadn’t won a game on the entire road trip. They desperately needed a strong start from Gavin Williams, and they got it.
Williams gave up two hits and two walks in six innings, giving the offense a chance to grab the lead and the bullpen a chance to keep it.
Ryan Jeffers put the Twins up 1-0 in the third inning with a single to score Willi Castro.
The Guardians couldn’t figure out Twins starter Chris Paddack until the sixth inning. Gabriel Arias drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game.
Nolan Jones gave the Guardians a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
In the eighth inning, Santana hit his second homer of the day as many of the fans had retreated to drier ground (see photo).
Remember, Santana played for the Twins last year and hit 23 home runs at age 38.
The Guardians added two insurance runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Angel Martinez and an RBI single by Jose Ramirez.
Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase kept the Twins off the board for the final three innings.
Despite the split, Cleveland is in fourth place in the AL Central Division with a record of 26-22.
The Detroit Tigers are six games ahead, and the Guardians will start a four-game series in Motown tonight at 6:40. Tanner Bibee (3-4) will start for Cleveland against Jack Flaherty (2-5).
