The Baltimore Orioles Made the Right Call by Firing Hyde

The time has finally come and the move finally happened. You never want to see anyone lose their job, but this had to happen for the Baltimore Orioles. They’ve front office has decided to relieve Brandon Hyde of his duties. They put out the following statement following his release.

At the end of the day, this is the right move and something that should have happened much sooner.

Orioles Make the Right Call

This is a move that should have been made a while ago, but I get that patience is a virtue. However, the writing has been on the wall that this team will not break out of their slump. There have been times where Hyde has been publicly critical of his players and their performance, but also times where he’s been there to support them. At the end of the day, the Orioles are not performing and are off to a dreadful start.

This is the third manager to be relieved of their duties due to the teams lack of performance. Is this all on Hyde? No not necessarily. The common denominator between the Rockies, Pirates, and now the Orioles is the lack of activity and spending by the front office and ownership. They failed to spend money and bring in valuable assets. They let Anthony Santander walk away and replace him with a cheaper Tyler O’Neill, who has already been on the injured list. They did not bring back Corbin Burnes (even though he chose to be home), which is well within his right. But the fact of the matter is they put out a bandaid fix on what needs to be a haul.

The pitching has been dreadful and the Orioles rank 28th in ERA, which is not great. To make matters worse, the players at the plate aren’t delivering either. They are 25th in average and in on base percentage. Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday both have gotten better this month, but you need much more from the rest of the cast. It just has not been good enough.

The Orioles are underperforming and are off to a subpar 15-28 record and have the second worst record in the American League. Yes, it is a wide open AL and this was a team that was pegged to be a playoff team and a team that contends for a World Series.

The Braves managed to turn things around after their abysmal start, so there is hope for the Orioles. But they need to begin playing a better brand of baseball.
