Palmquist makes decent as Rockies blanked 8-0
The Colorado Rockies’ 2025 season reached a new low on Friday night, suffering an 8-0 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. This loss dropped the Rockies to 7-37, marking the worst start through 44 games in Major League Baseball since 1901.
Arizona’s Corbin Burnes delivered a masterful performance, striking out 10 batters over six scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and three walks, showcasing dominance after a brief hiatus due to shoulder inflammation.
The Diamondbacks’ offense was ignited early, Tim Tawa doubling to left field to score Josh Naylor in the second. Geraldo Perdomo grounded out to drive in a run to make it 2-0 and Eugenio Suarez hit a sac fly to make it 3-0 in the third inning.
The Rockies had a chance in the fourth inning to get back into the game, managing to load the bases against Burnes, but Mickey Moniak struck out with two outs, ending the threat for the Rockies, who would struggle to get a base runner the rest of the game.
Gabriel Moreno doubled in a run in the fourth, followed by a Perdomo sac fly to make it 5-0. The Diamondbacks would go on to add three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to give them the 8-0 victory.’
Carson Palmquist, making his big league debut, allowed five runs on six hits with one walk over four innings. He threw plenty of strikes, but Arizona was successful in making contact, resulting in doubles down the line. Still, commanded the strike zone and threw strikes. Ryan Rolison, a fellow rookie, made a strong first full appearance, tossing 1 1/3 perfect innings and snagging his first big league strikeout.
Colorado’s defeat extended its losing streak to four games and marked its 12th loss in the past 13 outings. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer, who stepped in after Bud Black’s dismissal, remains winless in his tenure.
The Rockies’ offensive woes were evident, managing only two hits throughout the game and striking out 14 times.
As the Rockies aim to regroup, they face the challenge of overcoming a significant deficit in the standings. The team’s next opportunity to break their losing streak comes in the continuation of their series against the Diamondbacks.
