Sepp Straka wins the Truist Championship, his second win of the season

When it comes to golfers who have captured victory more than once this season, the list is short. In fact, the list is just two golfers long:

  • Rory McIlroy
  • Sepp Straka

Yes, Sepp Straka, who won the Truist Championship Sunday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, claimed his second victory of the 2025 season. The victory was arguably his best of his career, with the Truist being a signature event.

“It’s huge, the biggest win of my career,” Straka said of his fourth PGA Tour title.

While Straka can’t complain much about winning a tournament with some of the game’s best players in the field, it doesn’t mean he can’t look back and think how he could have been better in some areas.

“It’s not the best ball-striking week I’ve had,” Straka said. “Off the tee the first two days, I hit it terrible.”

Typically, if you aren’t striking the ball well tee to green and you still win, you are typically making up for it in another part of your game. For Straka it was his putter which was bailing him out in Philadelphia.

“The putter was just excellent this week. … Made a lot of mid-range putts, and that’s something you have to do when you want to win a golf tournament.” said Straka.

Straka moved to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, and earned himself $3.6 million of the $20 million purse in the PGA Tour’s sixth signature event of the season and takes home the winner’s cricket bat trophy, a nod to the group of students and cricketeers from Penn who founded Philly Cricket in 1854.

On top of all that, he is now poised to move into the top 10 in the world ranking and all but certain to make his second European Ryder Cup team. Ultimately, Straka is pleased with where his game is heading into the second major of the 2025 season, the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

“I think I’m in a good place,” he said. “A couple little improvements and little tweaks, especially going to a place I love like Quail Hollow, and I feel like I’m in a really good spot.”

Straka had to hold off some big names to claim victory at the Truist Championship, one player in particular was Justin Thomas. Thomas had a late charge, but wasn’t able to put the necessary pressure on Straka and Shane Lowry who were clearly the front-runners in the tournament.

“It was a good day,” said Thomas, who returns next week to the site of his first of two PGA Championship wins. “Obviously, I gave myself a chance. Starting three back to have a putt on 15 to tie for the lead, I definitely would have taken that at the start of the day.

“I fought hard, played well, and gave myself a chance, which is what I wanted.”

Outside of Straka, the most notable part of this past weekend likely was the course and Philadelphia area. Many had wondered if the course could hold up to the game’s best players, or if we would be looking at another -20 winner of the tournament. According to Straka, the course, and the fans, didn’t disappoint.

“You always hear about Philly sports fans, and it really is true,” Straka said. “I rooted for the Eagles a little bit last year because my Bulldogs had a lot of guys on defense there. Every time I heard a ‘Go Birds,’ it was kind of fun to hear that.”

As mentioned earlier, the PGA Tour now turns to the PGA Championship this weekend at Quail Hollow. Will Straka continue his tear throughout 2025, or will another big gun claim victory and a major championship?
