Robbing Them Blind: Jose Ramirez Steals Three Bases as Cleveland Guardians Beat Milwaukee Brewers
Jose Ramirez will go down in history as one of Cleveland’s greatest ballplayers, and he doesn’t always do it with his bat.
His aggressive baserunning sparked the Guardians’ offense last night in a 5-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Progressive Field.
Ramirez ignited the Guardians’ first rally in the fourth inning. He singled and stole second and third base.
Freddy Peralta (4-3) walked Carlos Santana and Bo Naylor to load the bases.
Gabriel Arias cleared the bags with a double to center field, giving Cleveland a 3-0 lead.
Ramirez kept the baserunning magic going in the sixth inning. After drawing a walk, he moved up on a wild pitch and then stole third again!
Kyle Manzardo cashed in with a single to score Ramirez, increasing the Guardians’ lead to 4-0.
Ramirez has stolen 255 bases in his career, moving him past Terry Turner into third place on Cleveland’s all-time list. Omar Vizquel is in second place, and Kenny Lofton is on top.
PATCHWORK PITCHING
Ben Lively cruised through three shutout innings for Cleveland before leaving with inflammation in his right forearm.
Jakob Junis survived a shaky fourth inning with no damage, as he earned his first victory as a Guardian.
Kolby Allard kept the Brewers off the scoreboard for the next three innings, lowering his ERA to 1.20.
Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis handled the final two innings to complete the seven-hit shutout.
WALK THIS WAY
Carlos Santana drove in Cleveland’s final run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk. He has walked 900 times in a Cleveland uniform, second only to Jim Thome at 1,008.
Game 2 of the series is set for tonight at 6:10. Logan Allen (1-2) will take the mound for Cleveland. Quinn Priester (1-1) will start for the Brewers.
