Panthers Prey On Maple Leafs, Tie Series 2-2

After the Maple Leafs took the loss in overtime in game 3, the Maple Leafs tried to shift the series and head back to Toronto with a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, they did not shift the series and got shutout in game 4 of the second round.

Joseph Woll made 35 stops for Toronto, competing in one of the best games possibly of his career. The Maple Leafs came out flat to start the game, and with the exception of a few 2-3 minute stretches, they didn’t get much going against the reigning Stanley Cup champions.

“He was great, played an excellent game,” Toronto coach Craig Berube said of Woll. “He was a big reason that it was only 1-0 (going into the third). … In the end, I really liked our physicality, our compete. Guys are playing hard. This is a tough series. They’re a very good team.”

Carter Verhaeghe gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the first period. It was the 4th Panthers power play of the game, and Verhaeghe beat Woll on a one-timer from a cross-ice pass from Matthew Tkachuk.

The Panthers outshot Toronto 29-12 through the first 40 minutes of the game, but they weren’t able to crack the outstanding performance of Joseph Woll. Woll was outstanding in this contest, and he only let in his second goal with about 8 minutes left in the game, following a turnover from William Nylander in the neutral zone. Sam Bennett entered the zone on a partial 2-on-1 and waited out Woll and the defense as he cut into the slot before scoring on the eventual open net.

After that goal, Florida limited Toronto to only four shots for the remainder of the game. Safe to say Toronto got shut down in this contest.

This series now becomes a best-of-three series. Two in Toronto, one in Florida. Toronto is going to have to find their game and find it quick if they want to win this series. The Panthers have all the momentum heading into Toronto, and they’re going to try to wrap this series up in 6 games. The Maple Leafs NEED the core four to get going. Auston Matthews has scored only three goals in his last 20 playoff games. 2-time 60-goal scorer Auston Matthews has only scored 3 goals in his last 20 playoff games. That is absolutely unacceptable from the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. These two teams will meet again on Wednesday night for game 5 in Toronto. Leafs Nation deserves a series win here. Go out and fight for it.
