Rockies offense shows late life but can’t overcome early struggles in 13-9 loss
The Colorado Rockies suffered another tough loss on Friday, May 9, falling 13–7 to the San Diego Padres at Coors Field. Despite a late offensive surge, the Rockies couldn’t overcome early pitching struggles and defensive miscues, extending their losing streak to seven games.
The Padres jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the third inning and adding five more in the fifth to build a commanding 10–1 lead. Gavin Sheets led the charge with a bases-clearing double, while Martín Maldonado added a two-run homer in the fifth. Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado also contributed with multi-hit games and RBIs.
Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela struggled, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits over 4.2 innings. The bullpen didn’t fare much better, surrendering five more runs as the Padres tallied 16 hits overall.
Colorado’s offense showed life late in the game, with Ryan McMahon, Michael Toglia, and Jordan Beck each hitting home runs. McMahon went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and Hunter Goodman added three hits and an RBI. The Rockies rallied for seven runs in the final two innings but finally ran out of luck on a game-ending double play. McMahon’s home run in the fourth snapped a 32 consecutive innings scoreless streak against the Padres, the longest streak against a team in franchise history.
The Rockies now sit at 6–32, the worst record in MLB, while the Padres improved to 24–13. The two teams will meet again on Saturday.
