Rangers Hire Former MLB All Star Brett Boone As New Hitting Coach

Less than 24 hours after dismissing offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, the Texas Rangers have already found their new guy.

On Monday afternoon, Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young announced the club has hired Bret Boone.

Boone will join the club immediately as he will fly to Boston and be in the dugout for the opening game of the Rangers six-game road trip at Fenway Park on Tuesday night.

It’s clear this was a well-thought-out decision, the Rangers didn’t dismiss Ecker, conduct a search, and hire Boone in less than 24 hours.

During the season, not a ton of hitting coach options are floating around out there, so the Rangers likely didn’t have a huge list of candidates before landing on Boone.

Boone played 14 seasons in the big leagues from 1992-2005 with Seattle, Cincinnati, Atlanta, San Diego, and Minnesota.

In 1780 MLB games, Boone hit .266 with 252 home runs and 1021 RBI while winning four Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers.

While Boone played for the Padres during the 2008 season, he was managed by now Rangers manager Bruce Bochy.

The two have remained close friends since then, with Bochy appearing on Boone’s podcast multiple times.

2025 will mark the first time in Bochy’s 28 seasons as manager that he will have a new coach join his staff in-season.

Boone said the chatter of him becoming the Rangers hitting coach started at his alma mater, USC, when he ran into Southern California native and USC legend Michael Young.

Eventually, Bochy called Boone, and it reportedly didn’t take long for him to decide to accept the job.

It won’t be an easy task for Boone, who certainly knows a thing or two about hitting. Entering the week, Entering the week, the Rangers rank 29th in runs scored, RBI, and walks, 28th in OBP, 25th in SLG, and 25th in batting average.
