Rockies rally erased by Chapman’s grand slam in 6-3 defeat
The Colorado Rockies fell to the San Francisco Giants 6–3 on Saturday, marking their second consecutive loss in the series.
San Francisco took an early lead in the third inning off the bat of Luis Matos with a his second home run of the season. The way the game was going it wouldn’t have been a surprise if that was the only run of the game.
It was a regular pitcher’s duel between the Giants’ Jordan Hicks and the Rockies Bradley Blalock. Making his second start of the season, Blalock cruised through five innings, giving up just two hits, including the Matos home run, while Hicks didn’t give up a hit until the fifth inning. However, both pitchers would run into trouble in the sixth inning.
The Rockies took a 3–1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, sparked by Brenton Doyle’s leadoff walk and subsequent singles from Jordan Beck, Ryan McMahon, and Hunter Goodman, the latter two of which gave the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Kyle Farmer added an infield single, scoring McMahon and extending the lead 3-1.
However, the Giants responded in the bottom of the sixth. After Rockies starter Bradley Blalock issued two walks, reliever Jake Bird entered and allowed an RBI single to Jung Hoo Lee, cutting the deficit to 3–2. Matt Chapman then delivered a grand slam to center field, giving the Giants a 6–3 advantage that would hold the rest of the way.
Giants relievers Randy Rodríguez, Camilo Doval, Erik Miller, and Ryan Walker combined for four scoreless innings, securing the win. Rodríguez earned the victory, while Bird took the loss for Colorado. C
The Rockies, now 6–27, will look to avoid a series loss in the finale on Sunday.
