Where do the Red Sox Go After the Casas Injury?

What a brutal week it has been for the Boston Red Sox. Not just the series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, but in the injury department. Kristian Campbell was already held out of the finale with rib discomfort and Walker Buehler has been shutdown due to shoulder issues. Well, let’s add to that list as Triston Casas was stretchered off the field due to a knee issue.

Casas Endures Yet Another Injury

You have to hate this as a Red Sox fan. This was a player that is aiming to bounce back agter he missed all but 63 games during the 2024 season. Casas dealt with rib discomfort and an oblique issue that practically derailed his entire season and a fresh start was all he was looking to do.

It has not been the best start for Casas in 2025, as he is hitting just .182 and with an OPS below .600. The tools are all there for Casas in terms of bat speed and making hard contact, but he has yet to fully put it together. Well, now he is likely to see his 2025 in jeopardy.

It was a routine play, but Casas stumbled over the first base bag and injured his knee. You could see it on his face and that look really said it all and as a Red Sox fan I am gutted for the guy. Upon the conclusion of the game, Manager Alex Cora labeled as a significant knee injury.

“It’s a significant knee injury,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said postgame, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “He’s at the hospital right now, getting more tests and all that stuff. We’ll have more information (Saturday).”

As Red Sox nation waits for more news, it’s now time to look at what the Red Sox can do to address the first base position.

The Red Sox Options at First Base

Okay, let’s put the Roman Anthony to first base thing to rest already. Craig Breslow actually did that already so we can stop having that take flying around the world. With that being said, depth at the position is not in plenty, but there are options the club could do to weather the storm of losing their first baseman.

The easy solution is to just give Roma Gonzalez more playing time. Cora has used him as a platoon option, but as of right now he is the teams’ everyday first baseman. Gonzalez is hitting .279 and with a .759 OPS. He has been serviceable and has been able to come in and give the team some production at the plate. He struggled defensively last year, but has looked a tad bit better this season, which is not saying much. But they could very much continue the youth movement and bring up a member of Triple A.

No, it is not Marcelo Mayer. But it is Vaughn Grissom. The Red Sox have done a good job of utilizing the player and giving him reps in other areas. Second base is a logjam and so is the outfield, so they’ve plugged him at the first base position. Not bad.

Grissom has also done well at the plate down in Worcester. He is hitting .287 and with an .813 OPS. He’s hit three home runs and driven in 14 runs. Grissom already has more extra base hits this season and in 100 less plate appearances. Huge for him and love seeing him find success.

There is the caveat where they go out and make a minor trade to help shore up the position. Remember the legend of Dom Smith? Yeah, bring in a guy like that if you feel you need to.

This isn’t good for the Red Sox. And this isn’t fun for Casas. To see him go through this yet again is horrible to see and knowing how hard he’s worked to get back to this spot. The Red Sox definitely have adversity they are facing and how they overcome it will be something to see.
