Phillies Tie up Cubs Series 1-1

The Phillies have finally ended their five-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. After a two-hour and twenty-minute rain delay before yesterday’s series opener, it started to pour metaphorically for the Phillies as they saw another loss added to their season record following the 4-0 loss. After a few games now with little to no offensive production in both Chicago and New York, the Phillies’ offense made some adjustments and exploded today in a hard-fought, well-deserved win. In addition to the team finally starting to produce at the plate again, JesĂșs Luzardo truly was the MVP of this game. Luzardo had six solid innings, only allowing three hits, striking out 5, and lowering his ERA to 1.32, proving to be one of the best under-the-radar offseason moves this season.

With a quiet beginning to today’s game, many were worried that today’s game would fall by the way of yesterday’s; however, the fourth inning sparked something within the Phillies as the bats became alive. In the top of the fourth inning, the rally began when clean-up hitter Kyle Schwarber got hit by a pitch from the young starter. Then, right-handed hitters Nick Castellanos and JT Realmuto benefited from some pitches right down the middle with a pair of singles, bringing Max Kepler to the plate. Kepler was absolutely due for a clutch hit, and came through with yet another oppo-single to left, scoring Schwarber and moving JT and Castellanos to second and third. Next up was Alec Bohm, who also hit a solid shot out to left, scoring another, and loading the bases for Johan Rojas. After a sac fly from the young centerfielder, the lineup flipped over for Bryson Stott. Stott, who has been having a stellar start to his 2025 campaign and currently holds the best batting average on the team, racked up another RBI as Kepler scored on his bloop single to left-center. However, the hit parade continued after Trea Turner’s flyout to center when Bryce Harper stepped in and blasted a double to deep center, scoring both Stott and Bohm. After Brown batted around the lineup in one inning, Cubs’ manager Craig Counsell decided to pull him and put in the veteran lefty, Drew Pomeranz, who stopped the bleeding by getting Schwarber, who returned to the plate after starting the inning, to line out to third base, but putting the Phillies up 6-0.

The Cubs started to come alive not long after in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Seiya Suzuki, which scored two; however, the Phillies quickly responded with two of their own in the top of the sixth. After a one-out walk to Rojas and Stott getting hit by a pitch, Trea Turner gained an RBI after singling to the gap in right-center, making Chicago pay for that leadoff walk to start the inning. Before the end of the inning, the Phillies added one more of their own, making the score 9-2 on a double from Schwarber that scored Turner and Stott with ease. With another great inning from the Phillies’ starter, JesĂșs Luzardo, the Phillies were quickly back up to bat with Realmuto, Kepler, and Bohm due up. With only one home run on the season, in his eighty-second at bat with the Phillies, Max Kepler launched his second homer of the year in the top of the seventh. Hitting an “almost impossible shot,” according to Kyle Schwarber, who is no stranger to Wrigley’s ivy walls, Kepler managed to hook a home run right around the right field pole, 369 feet, extending the Phillies’ lead 10-2.

Before Carlos Hernandez could close it out, the Cubs did score two more in the bottom of the seventh, but with how dominant the Phillies were at the dish today, the number one team in the NL Central just couldn’t come back. It was a much-needed morale boost for this team, and with Ranger Suárez and Brandon Marsh’s returns also on the horizon, the Phillies are starting to get things together a little bit more as they currently sit at one game over .500.
