Cleveland Guardians Put Away Pesky Pittsburgh Pirates

After building a 10-2 lead at the seventh-inning stretch, the Cleveland Guardians didn’t exactly cruise to victory.

But they did get a 10-7 win on Friday night. That’s what counts.

Luis Ortiz pitched against his old band of buccaneers and won his second game with Cleveland.

Ortiz lasted five innings, giving up four hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out eight.

Cade Smith pitched a scoreless sixth, but the Pirates clawed their way back into the game by scoring five runs off Tim Herrin, Jakob Junis, and Paul Sewald.

Emmanuel Clase recorded the final out to collect his third save.

Oneil Cruz jump started the Pittsburgh offense with a leadoff homer, but Bo Naylor tied the game in the third with a 425-foot bomb into the Pirates’ bullpen in center field.

Kyle Manzardo added an RBI double in the third for Cleveland, but Joey Bart tied the game with an RBI in the bottom of the inning.

OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT

Cleveland took control of the game by scoring eight unanswered runs. Naylor gave the Guardians a 4-2 lead with a two-run double in the fourth.

Jose Ramirez scored on an error by Pittsburgh third baseman Jared Triolo in the fifth.

The Guardians tacked on five more runs in the seventh. Jhonkesny Noel and Gabriel Arias hit back-to-back two-run doubles.

Brayan Rocchio finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

PIRATES OFF THE PORT-BOW!

Pittsburgh’s furious comeback included home runs by Bryan Reynolds and Enmanuel Valdez.

With the tying run at home plate, Clase struck out Jack Suwinski to end the game.

Game 2 of the series at PNC Park will start at 4:05 today. Fireballing starter Paul Skenes (2-1) will challenge the Guardians, who will counter with Ben Lively (0-2).
