Rangers Sign Patrick Corbin Amidst Injury Woes

Just over a week until the start of their 2025 season, the Texas Rangers have been thrown into a position to find innings out of the rotation.

With Jon Gray out for at least six weeks and Cody Bradford out for at least four, the Rangers were forced to search for some much-needed relief.

That search led them externally as on Tuesday afternoon, the Rangers announced a deal with their newest hurler.

Texas announced they have signed LHP Patrick Corbin to a one-year, major league deal. To make room for Corbin on the 40-man roster, Gray has been placed on the 60-day IL.

Corbin’s deal will be worth a little more than $1 million of guaranteed money with a few million in incentives.

At first glance, Corbin’s numbers are not eye-popping by any means. In 2024, Corbin went 6-13 with a 5.26 ERA with the Washington Nationals.

However, at this point, the Rangers are going to need someone who knows how to eat innings and there might not be anyone who knows that better than Corbin.

Since 2019, Corbin has started 170 games and pitched 946.2 innings while striking out 832 batters.

Those 170 starts put Corbin third in MLB in that span behind Aaron Nola (175) and Jose Berrios (172).

Corbin has been named an All-Star twice in his career once in 2013 and once in 2018, both coming with Arizona.

In 2019, Corbin put up some solid numbers throwing 202.2 innings with a 3.25 ERA for a Nationals team that went on to win the World Series.

The Rangers hope that being back on a competitive team will bring some of that back out for Corbin.

It’s still unclear exactly what Corbin’s ramp-up process will look like but Texas likely expects he will impact their rotation sooner rather than later.
