3 Closers The Rangers Could Target

Following their recent run of playing just as well as anyone across Major League Baseball, the Texas Rangers have put themselves in a position to do a little shopping ahead of Thursday’s Trade Deadline.

Despite a bullpen that ranks amongst the best in all of baseball, Texas hasn’t found a defined closer in a group of nearly all new arms.

Now, as the deadline nears, the Rangers will be keen on adding a proven ninth-inning guy to lock down games as the team continues its push for the postseason.

Let’s break down three proven closers that Chris Young and the Rangers could target ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

1. Kyle Finnegan, Washington Nationals, 4.38 ERA, 39 IP, 20 SV – Last off-season, Kyle Finnegan was surprisingly non-tendered by the Nationals after an All-Star 2024 season.

As the Rangers were finishing up their bullpen makeover, Finnegan was one of the names they were interested in, but ultimately decided that he was above their price range.

Flash forward six months, and the Rangers could be a spot for Finnegan, who is sure to be dealt by Thursday.

2. David Bednar, Pittsburgh Pirates, 2.37 ERA, 38 IP, 17 SV – 2025, finally seems like the deadline where David Bednar gets traded after having his name floated around for years.

After struggling to the tune of a 5.77 ERA last season, Bednar has bounced back in a huge way for a Pirates team with very little to write home about this season.

The Rangers have reportedly reached out to the Pirates regarding Bednar, but they are far from the only team to do so.

If Texas decides to make a splash for a top-of-the-market guy like Bednar, it will be competing with a lot of other contenders who need bullpen help.

3. Ryan Helsley, St Louis Cardinals, 3.00 ERA, 36 IP, 21 SV – For a while, it looked like Ryan Helsley was going to stay put with the Cardinals, but amidst a crowded NL Central and Wild Card race, it looks like St Louis is going to part ways with their star closer.

Helsley has consistently been one of the game’s best 9th-inning arms since entering the league in 2019, and he is having another electric season this year.

Like Bednar, a trade for Helsley will come at a premium cost for Texas, which will be competing with multiple other contenders for his services.
