20 Is a Magic Number: Shohei Ohtani Strikes Again as LA Dodgers Beat Cleveland Guardians

The World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers relied on the long ball in a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.

Shohei Ohtani homered for the third straight game, becoming the first player in the major leagues to hit 20 homers this year.

Looking at the calendar, we are still in the month of May.

TOO MANY BATS

Tanner Bibee (4-5) lasted five innings on the mound for Cleveland. He gave up two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Andy Pages and Dalton Rushing.

Ohtani increased the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer. Bibee has surrendered 12 long balls in 11 starts, which is the fifth-most in the major leagues.

Daniel Schneemann fired back for the Guardians with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth off Dustin May (3-4).

However, the Dodgers kept pouring on the offense. Michael Conforto’s homer off Hunter Gaddis in the sixth increased the champs’ lead to 5-3.

In the eighth, an error by Cleveland center fielder Angel Martinez allowed Teoscar Hernandez to score.

Max Muncy walloped a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Nic Enright to blow the game open at 9-3.

Cleveland never gives up, and Gabriel Arias hit a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth.

JOSE’S STREAK

Jose Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 20 games. He’s the first Cleveland player to accomplish that feat since Jason Kipnis did it 10 years ago.

Ramirez also doubled in Monday’s game to move into fourth place on the franchise list with 376. He was tied with Joe Sewell, and Earl Averill is only two doubles ahead of Ramirez.

AFTERNOON DELIGHT

The Guardians will try to avoid the sweep this afternoon against future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw, who will make his third start of the season.

Slade Cecconi was supposed to start for Cleveland, but he is experiencing “right groin tightness.” We’ll see who gets the call from manager Stephen Vogt. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. Eastern.
